Between Homogenisation and Fragmentation

Dynamics of Globalisation

As we have seen in lesson "Globalisation Processes A" and as the quotation at the beginning of this lesson reminds us, globalisation is not a simple, uniform process. What people eat, what they wear, who their friends are, whether they keep their job or not: all these things form our daily lives are more or less influenced by globalisation. The effects of globalisation are very real and visible in the North as well as in the South.

However, to say that globalisation influences large aspects of our daily lives does not mean that this influence occurs in the same fashion in all situations and contexts. There are indeed different dynamics in the globalisation process and the main ones that will be presented here - along with their effects - are:

The variety of these effects has been recognized by several authors, and it is the way these processes intertwine that shapes today's globalisation process (Appadurai 2003), (Barber 2003).
