Livelihood Analysis

In this activity you will analyse and compare households and the external social, economic, institutional and natural environment that affects them. The aim is to identify the range of positive and negative factors that have an effect on people's ability to sustain a livelihood.

To do so, you will read the background information on Zambia and also watch the film 'Pruned' (ca 15 min). The film shows how Mr Ngalande compares his past and his present, and also his own situation with that of his peers.

Exercise

Firstly, open and read the background information on Zambia in the PDF file in the right-hand column carefully:

Then open and watch the film 'Pruned' (ca. 13'):

Follow these five steps or questions:

  1. Arrange and order the given information into the key elements of one of the three frameworks discussed above (brief notes/keywords). Briefly explain your reasons for using your chosen framework.
  2. Examine factors within Mr Ngalande's household that have a positive or negative impact on their livelihoods.
  3. Examine factors outside Mr Ngalande's household that have a positive or negative impact on their livelihoods.
  4. Decide how vulnerable the household is in your opinion and provide reasons for your categorisation.
  5. How helpful did you find the framework to order the information? Which limitations did you find when using the framework?

In the end, you should be able to figure out the main hindering or constraining factors as well as the potentials of Mr and Mrs Ngalande's livelihoods.

Write them down in notes and discuss your findings in groups.
