The problems in rural sub-Saharan Africa that are described above and the related crisis
in understanding the aims and dynamics of development, can be interpreted on two different
levels:
- Development goals: a 'Sustainable Development approach' (SDA) has been, and still is, postulated,
- Development dynamics: a regional and actor-oriented perspective is required.
With regard to development dynamics, Wiesmann (1998) has advanced the following hypothesis:
"A regional focus which is combined with an actor-oriented perspective can deepen the understanding of the impacts and the
dynamics of development and environmental problems
in rural peripheral areas of Africa and will be useful in the search for solutions to these problems." (Wiesmann 1998, p. 32)
How one might come to this "understanding", is the subject of the following lesson.
