Relevance of an Actor-Oriented and Regional Focus

Before we look at how it might be possible to come to this "understanding", we should take a glance at the relevance of theory to development-oriented research.

If we now turn our attention to the development dynamics mentioned above, we can approach the impacts of the "development crisis" by focussing on two areas:

If we focus on the problems, we see that:

  • We must take into account those categories of population and actor who act within, ascribe value to and are affected by concrete cases;
  • In cases where there are environmental problems, a concrete spatial reference is required (spatially specific land-use systems and ecological processes).

If we focus on understanding and finding solutions, we see that:

  • External influences reveal themselves against the background of existing conditions and structures in the regional context;
  • Actor-specific room for manoeuvre manifests itself in the context of conditions, hierarchies and relations.

In this lesson, we adopt a solution-oriented focus.

In order to address development problems in a solution-oriented manner, we postulate a regional and actor-oriented approach here. What exactly does this imply for research and specifically for development-oriented research?
