If our research questions address the life, income and gainful occupation of actors
(i.e. their livelihoods) and the attempted aim and solution are (or shall be) knowledge-based
strategies, then the tools and models which help to answer the related research questions
require a solid and unshakeable foundation: an underlying theory.
This underlying theory is based on a specific ontology.
We can conclude that, in development efforts, simplified "if-then" approaches and solutions will always come up short and
potentially give incomplete interpretations if they lack the
appropriate underlying theories.
